2012 is a big Olympics year, with the globally esteemed games taking place in London at the end of July. Some of the world’s finest athlete will be competing for glory, but how did they get started on their road to sporting brilliance? Chances are, they will have undertaken at least some gymnastics training as a child. Gymnastics is the perfect way to introduce young people to fitness, flexibility and sporting competition. Here are a few reasons why it is recommended to get them interested early.
Stop the obesity rot
Like it or not, the current younger generations are moving about less than their predecessors. TV, video games and social media are encouraging them to exchange running about outside for hours spent sitting on the sectional couch, eyes glued to a screen. We need to work now to combat childhood obesity before it becomes a massive global concern. Gymnastics is a great place to start – it is relatively low cost, easy to get into and accessible to all.
Fun, fun, fun
Children can usually be encouraged to move their bodies more if the activity they are doing is enjoyable. That’s where gymnastics, with all its variety, interesting equipment and competitive elements can come in. It is also one of the earliest sports that you can introduce to a child, with parent and toddler classes starting from as young as 18 months. Children can even be treated to gymnastics birthday parties for themselves and their friends to help promote the idea that it is really great fun.
Mens sana in corpore sano
A healthy mind in a healthy body – says it all. Research has shown positive links between the amount of activity a person does and their level of brain activity and academic achievements. Fitter children tend also to have better communication skills, longer attention spans, higher self-esteem and increased problem-solving skills. In addition to all of that, gymnastics can also teach team work, goal setting, interaction with adults and the satisfaction of hard work and dedication.
Working with autism
Gymnastics could also be particularly beneficial to children with autism, as it provides a structured environment in which to develop gross and fine motor skills, while fostering social interaction and skills such as turn-taking and listening to instructions in an alternative educational setting.
More than the sum of the body parts
While all sports carry with them physical benefits, gymnastics is especially well suited to the young, developing body. It teaches flexibility and inner core strength. Not to mention speed, balance, coordination, good posture, power, self-confidence and discipline. Habits picked up during gymnastics training, including good nutrition and general maintenance of a healthy lifestyle, can stay with a child throughout its life.
Safety first
While it is true that injuries can sometimes occur, particularly to the upper body and muscles, trainers and professionals work extremely hard to keep these incidents down to a minimum. Dealing with children of a particularly young age means that great care must be taken to ensure their safety. When injuries do occur, coaches are trained in first aid, and the vast majority of cases can be easily treated at the emergency room if necessary.
Gymnastics techniques tend to centre around flexibility and core strength, thus setting the participant up to sustain greater pressure on the body in later life. Having a greater awareness of the body and what it can and, more importantly, cannot do, will also help reduce injuries in situations outside the gymnasium. Plus, of course, the more active your lifestyle, the fitter – and therefore safer – you will be.
Taking it further
Gymnastics can be a great hobby that will help keep obesity at bay and develop a child’s physical strength and well-being. However, it is also a highly competitive sport that, for the right athlete, can bring glory and success. Children who want to take their gymnastics involvement further can have access to competitions at all standard, from elementary school right up to a professional level.
Coaches are trained to spot potential and to guide young gymnasts and their families through the various options, while making sure they are not attempting too much too soon, or are being pushed unnecessarily. In this crucial Olympic year, why not look into giving your child a chance to try gymnastics – you will soon start to see the benefits.

New sport on Gymnastics Horizon?
Our friend Marco van Geloven from Netherlands introduced us to a new gymnastics sport. Pole Gymnastics is a
combination of acrobatics and free artistic pole dancing. It is like an exercise in gymnastics with a rhythmic gymnastics.
The components consist of presentations, floor exercise and pole acrobatics. Gymnastic Pole has emerged from the artistic
pole dancing and the name changed because of the erotic charge to the name pole dancing sticks. The Pole Gymnastic mentioning
is clear to everyone that it is an artistic and acrobatic sports are without any form of eroticism.
Gymnastic Pole, like other sports turn a good basis for movement and is also suitable for youth.
